Governor John P. deJongh Jr. has issued a proclamation granting administrative leave for the celebration of the 56th anniversary of Virgin Islands Carnival. "The granting of leave to non-essential employees of the Government is to encourage greater participation in the annual Food Fair and to enhance the celebration of Carnival by all residents," deJongh wrote in the proclamation.

In the St. Thomas-St. John district only, deJongh granted administrative leave from 12 noon to 5 p.m. on Wednesday, April 23 and from 8:00 a.m. to

5:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 24.  The annual Food, Arts and Crafts Fair which honors Ruth Anthony will be held on Wednesday in Emancipation Garden and the pre-dawn tramp, J'ouvert, will be held on Thursday along St. Thomas' Veterans Drive.

The proclamation grants territory-wide administrative leave from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Friday, April 25, the day of the Children's Parade and Carnival horse races.

During this historical and festive season, hundreds of families, friends, visitors and supporters will be visiting the Territory to enjoy and partake of our cultural activities, and the sights and sounds of Carnival, deJongh said, adding, that the annual celebration provides a tremendous financial boost to our economy and helps to promote a greater understanding and appreciation of Carnival and our culture.
