2019 Governor’s Summer Writing Challenge

July 8 – September 20, 2019

WHO 

  • All secondary students within the U.S. Virgin Islands in grades 7-11
  • Ages 13-18

WHAT we are looking for

  • Great stories written by teens about the teenage experience
  • Works should be between 600-750 words
  • Stories can deal with issues of identity, friendship, family, and coming-of-age
  • Original, unpublished fiction of any genre – literary, fantasy, sci-fi, romance stories, horror and more. Previously published stories and stories submitted for publication elsewhere will not be considered. These works include stories that have been self-published online on personal websites or other publishing platforms.
  • Only one submission per theme per person is allowed
  • Entries must be submitted in English

To motivate writers, promote the initiative and to assist students with the writing process, writing workshop will be held on:

  • Saturday, July 27, 2019

Prizes: There will be 3 Winners Per District

  • Laptop Computer
  • Cash Prize
  • Mentorship with acclaimed publishers, authors and writing coaches
  • Published Entries in Voices of the Virgin IslandsAn Anthology of Virgin Islands Writings
  • Published writers will receive 10 copies of the publication and media coverage  

Submissions: All entries must be submitted via WORD, PDF, RTF and TXT files. The files must be less than 500KB. The submission window opens at 12:00 a.m. on Monday, September 8, 2019 and will close at 11:59 p.m. on Friday, September 20, 2019.
