Governor remembers the “Calypso King of the World” as a storyteller, cultural giant and unmistakable voice of the Caribbean
U.S. VIRGIN ISLANDS — Governor Albert Bryan Jr. joined people throughout the Virgin Islands and across the Caribbean Sunday in mourning the passing of legendary calypsonian and songwriter Slinger Francisco, known around the world as the Mighty Sparrow.
Sparrow, 91, was born in Grenada and raised in Trinidad and Tobago, where he emerged as one of the defining voices of calypso. Over a career spanning more than seven decades, his wit, musicianship and fearless social commentary helped carry the distinctly Caribbean art form to audiences around the world.
Known as the “Calypso King of the World,” Sparrow chronicled Caribbean life with an unmatched ability to move between humor, celebration, social criticism and political commentary. His music reflected the experiences, contradictions and aspirations of generations of Caribbean people while helping establish calypso as a powerful vehicle for storytelling and cultural expression.
Governor Bryan issued the following statement:
“Today, I join the people of the Virgin Islands and the entire Caribbean in mourning Slinger Francisco, our beloved Mighty Sparrow, the Calypso King of the World and the greatest calypsonian of all time.
“Sparrow gave voice to the Caribbean’s struggles, joys, humor, and pride. Through his extraordinary gift for storytelling, he challenged injustice, held leaders accountable, and reminded us of the power of our culture. His music made us dance, laugh, and think, often all within the same song.
“Here in the Virgin Islands, where calypso holds a special place in our hearts, we share deeply in this loss. His legacy lives in every calypsonian who takes the stage with something meaningful to say and every generation that discovers the brilliance of his music.
“On behalf of the people of the U.S. Virgin Islands, I extend heartfelt condolences to his family, loved ones, and the people of Trinidad and Tobago and Grenada.
“Rest in peace, King Sparrow. Thank you for giving the Caribbean a voice the world could never ignore.”
Sparrow’s influence extended far beyond the competition stage. His extensive body of work documented decades of Caribbean history, politics, relationships, humor and social change, while influencing generations of calypsonians and other Caribbean artists.
His passing marks the end of an extraordinary chapter in Caribbean cultural history, but the voice, music and stories of the Mighty Sparrow will remain part of the region’s soundtrack for generations to come.
