Non-essential government offices will be closed on both days; essential services will continue
U.S. VIRGIN ISLANDS —Governor Albert Bryan Jr. announced Monday that non-essential government employees will receive administrative leave on Monday, Nov. 2, for Liberty Day, and Friday, Nov. 27, the day after Thanksgiving. Non-essential government offices will be closed on both days.
The Governor made the announcement during his weekly Government House press briefing, giving government employees additional time off during the upcoming holiday season.
Liberty Day, also known as D. Hamilton Jackson Day, is celebrated each year on Nov. 1. The holiday honors David Hamilton Jackson, a Virgin Islands leader who fought for workers’ rights, freedom of the press and better opportunities for Virgin Islanders. Because Nov. 1 falls on a Sunday this year, the Governor has granted administrative leave to non-essential employees on Monday, Nov. 2.
The Governor has also granted administrative leave on Friday, Nov. 27, giving eligible employees a longer Thanksgiving weekend.
“Liberty Day reminds us of people like David Hamilton Jackson, who stood up for the rights of Virgin Islanders and helped create opportunities for future generations,” Governor Bryan said. “I also want to recognize our government employees for the work they do every day to serve our people. The holidays are a time to spend with family, give thanks and remember the people and traditions that make our Virgin Islands special.”
While non-essential government offices will be closed on Nov. 2 and Nov. 27, essential government services will remain available. Essential employees and those who work regular or rotating shifts must report to work as scheduled.
