Essential government personnel must report to work as scheduled

U.S. VIRGIN ISLANDS — The Office of Governor Albert Bryan Jr. announces that all public schools and Executive Branch government offices in the St. Thomas-St. John District will be closed Friday, October 23, 2026, due to ongoing power interruptions resulting from reduced generation capacity at the Randolph Harley Power Plant on St. Thomas.

The closure is intended to protect the safety and well-being of students, teachers and government employees as the Virgin Islands Water and Power Authority (WAPA) works to address the generation shortfall and stabilize electrical service.

Essential government personnel are required to report to work as scheduled to ensure the continued delivery of critical public services.

Governor Bryan recognizes the disruption these power interruptions and closures create for families, employees and businesses and appreciates the public’s patience as efforts continue to restore reliable electrical service.

Residents are encouraged to monitor official WAPA communications for updates on electrical service and announcements from the Virgin Islands Department of Education and individual government agencies regarding the resumption of normal operations.

Additional updates will be provided as information becomes available.
