Governor Bryan Issues Proclamations Recognizing Significant Days, Weeks, and Months of September 2025

U.S. VIRGIN ISLANDS – Governor Albert Bryan Jr. has issued a series of proclamations for September 2025, calling on Virgin Islanders to reflect, honor, and take action on matters of history, health, preparedness, and community responsibility.

“Each September, we are reminded of the importance of reflection and resilience,” Governor Bryan said. “This month provides opportunities to honor the sacrifices of others, raise awareness on critical issues, and work together to strengthen our Territory.”

Among the notable days recognized this month is Patriot Day on Thursday, September 11, honoring the lives lost during the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. “May they forever rest in peace and abide in our memories,” the Governor stated in his proclamation.

On Monday, September 1, the Territory will observed West Indies Solidarity Day, recognizing the invaluable contributions of West Indian migrants to the culture, growth, and diversity of the Virgin Islands.

On Sunday, September 7, Governor Bryan has proclaimed National Grandparents’ Day, encouraging Virgin Islanders to celebrate the wisdom and vital support that grandparents provide in strengthening families and nurturing future generations.

Later in the month, the Governor has declared Saturday, September 27, as Maroon Commemorative Day, honoring the resilience of enslaved Africans who sought freedom by creating independent Maroon communities in areas such as Maroon Ridge on St. Croix. That same day, Virgin Islanders will also observe Seat Check Saturday, following a weeklong recognition of Child Passenger Safety Week (September 21–27), to encourage safe driving practices and the proper use of seat belts and child restraints.

The following day, Sunday, September 28, the Territory will join the nation in observing Gold Star Mother’s and Families’ Day, honoring the families who have endured the ultimate sacrifice of losing loved ones in service to the United States Armed Forces.

Governor Bryan has also proclaimed September as a month of awareness and education on several pressing issues:

  • National Preparedness Month, urging Virgin Islanders to strengthen emergency and disaster readiness.
  • Ovarian and Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, calling attention to the importance of early detection and treatment of two of the most challenging cancers affecting women and men.
  • National Suicide Prevention Awareness Month, highlighting the urgent need for compassion, resources, and intervention to prevent loss of life.
  • Labor and Management Awareness Month, underscoring the Governor’s commitment to workforce development and encouraging Virgin Islanders abroad to contribute to the Territory’s growth.
  • Responsible Gaming Education Month, observed alongside the Virgin Islands Casino Control Commission and the American Gaming Association, encouraging responsible gambling practices.
  • Attendance Awareness Month, emphasizing that consistent school attendance is essential to the academic success and future opportunities of Virgin Islands youth.

Additionally, in recognition of the United Nations’ designation, Governor Bryan reaffirmed the Territory’s observance of the International Decade of Indigenous Languages (2022–2032), honoring Indigenous Caribbean Amerindians and their cultural contributions.

“These proclamations are more than ceremonial—they are reminders of our history, our responsibilities, and our opportunities to build a stronger future,” Governor Bryan said. “I urge every Virgin Islander to take them to heart.”
