U.S. VIRGIN ISLANDS– Governor Albert Bryan Jr. announced his nomination of Acting Police Commissioner Mario Brooks as the Bryan-Roach Administration’s candidate for Commissioner of the Virgin Islands Police Department (VIPD) during Tuesday’s Government House Weekly Press Press Briefing.
Governor Bryan praised Commissioner Brooks for his steady leadership, deep commitment to public safety, and ability to foster trust between law enforcement and the community.
“Commissioner Brooks has demonstrated time and again that he is not only a steady hand in times of crisis but also a leader who inspires progress and innovation,” Governor Bryan said. “He has earned the respect of his peers and the trust of the community by delivering results and building stronger connections between law enforcement and the people we serve.”
Mario Brooks, a proud son of the Virgin Islands, brings over 30 years of distinguished service in law enforcement and the military. Rising through the ranks of the VIPD, Brooks has served in critical leadership roles, including Commander of the Criminal Intelligence Unit and the Special Response Team. His tenure has been marked by groundbreaking achievements, such as expanding marine enforcement capabilities and establishing the territory’s first drone program to enhance public safety.
In addition to his law enforcement career, Brooks serves as a Lieutenant Colonel in the Virgin Islands National Guard, where he continues to provide exemplary service to the territory. His dual expertise in civilian and military leadership uniquely positions him to address the complex challenges facing the VIPD.
Following Governor Bryan’s announcement, Commissioner Nominee Mario Brooks expressed his gratitude and shared his vision for the department.
“Thank you, Governor Bryan, and good afternoon to the people of the Virgin Islands. I am deeply honored and humbled by your nomination to serve as the Commissioner of the Virgin Islands Police Department. My heartfelt gratitude to you, sir, for your trust in me—it is indeed an honor,” said Brooks.
“I see this nomination as a call to action to strengthen trust and foster better community-policing partnerships. I am ready and committed to work tirelessly for the people of the Virgin Islands, to lead with transparency, compassion, and resolve, and to uphold the high standards that the people of our community rightfully expect.”
Brooks also acknowledged the dedication of his colleagues in the VIPD, stating, “I am profoundly grateful for the chance to contribute to this mission alongside the courageous men and women of the Virgin Islands Police Department, whose continued dedication to service has been a source of inspiration to me every day. Together, we will work toward a brighter, safer, and stronger Virgin Islands.”
Governor Bryan called on members of the 35th Legislature to swiftly confirm Brooks’ nomination, emphasizing the critical role of strong and consistent leadership in law enforcement during these pivotal times.
“The safety of our community is not just a priority; it is the foundation upon which all progress is built,” Governor Bryan said. “With Commissioner Brooks at the helm, I am confident we will continue to make the Virgin Islands safer for all our residents and visitors.”
