Discussion centers on student opportunity, financial accountability and the University’s essential role in the Territory’s economic recovery
U.S. VIRGIN ISLANDS – Governor Albert Bryan Jr., Lieutenant Governor Tregenza A. Roach, Senate President Milton E. Potter and Senator Novelle E. Francis Jr. met with representatives of the University of the Virgin Islands’ accreditation team to reaffirm the Territory’s commitment to UVI and discuss the financial and operational steps needed to strengthen its long-term sustainability.
Territorial leaders emphasized that UVI is a strategic partner in the Virgin Islands’ economic recovery, preparing residents for careers, developing the Territory’s workforce and expanding access to opportunities close to home. The discussion underscored a shared commitment to supporting the University while addressing the challenges facing the institution.
Governor Bryan expressed strong support for UVI and pledged to identify additional funding to help bring its outstanding financial audits up to date. Participants discussed an audit backlog of approximately four to five years, with missing financial information identified as a contributing factor. University officials expressed confidence that they could resolve the outstanding information gaps and complete the audits.
The discussion also highlighted approximately $13 million in government funding moved to support the University during the past quarter, reflecting the Territory’s continued financial commitment to the institution.
Senator Francis emphasized the importance of investing in education and expanding opportunity. He contrasted the approximately $50,000 annual cost of housing an incarcerated person with the less than $10,000 annual figure he cited for educating a university student. He stressed that investing in students and their futures helps explain the Territory’s commitment to free tuition.
