Statement from Governor Bryan on the Passing of Wayne “Bully” Petersen

U.S. VIRGIN ISLANDS— Governor Albert Bryan Jr. Issued the following statement Thursday on the passing of St. Croix Quelbe singer, songwriter, and culture bearer, Wayne “Bully” Petersen:

“It is with a heavy heart that I join the St. Croix community and the people of the Virgin Islands in mourning the loss of a true cultural icon, Wayne “Bully” Petersen. “Bully” was more than just a gifted singer, songwriter, and musician—he was a guardian of our Crucian heritage, a passionate storyteller, and an unwavering preserver of the traditions that define us as a people.

“I always enjoyed my conversations with “Bully,” both on and off the airwaves. Whether we were discussing music, history, or the pressing issues of our time, he always spoke with wisdom, authenticity, and a deep love for the island of St. Croix and our Virgin Islands. His dedication to our culture was not just something he performed—it was something he lived, in every note he played and every word he sang.

“Beyond his immense musical talent, “Bully” was an outstanding human being with a great heart. He carried his love for our people in everything he did, always working to uplift, educate, and inspire. Through his music and his commitment to preserving our way of life, he has left a legacy that will resonate for generations to come.

“On behalf of the entire Bryan-Roach Administration, I extend my deepest condolences to his family, friends, and all those who were touched by his music and spirit. While we grieve this tremendous loss, let us also celebrate the life of a man who gave so much of himself to the Virgin Islands. Rest in eternal peace, “Bully.” Your voice, your passion, and your love for our culture will never be forgotten.”
