(St. Croix, USVI) – The Virgin Islands Waste Management Authority (VIWMA) has provided an update on the fire that occurred at the Anguilla Landfill on Sunday, October 20, 2024, and continued through Monday, October 21, 2024.
The VI Fire and Emergency Medical Services (VIFEMS), VI Waste Management Authority (VIWMA), and the Landfill operator all worked together to extinguish the fire. The fire was successfully extinguished this afternoon, at approximately 2 p.m.
During this two-day event, VIWMA worked in conjunction with numerous government agencies including the Office of the Governor, VI Territorial Emergency Management Agency (VITEMA), VI Departments of Health (DOH) and VI Department of Planning and Natural Resources (DPNR), Virgin Islands Port Authority (VIPA) and the Virgin Islands National Guard (VING) to coordinate this response.
The Anguilla Landfill will have a delayed opening on Tuesday, October 22, 2024. Hours of operation will be from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The VI Waste Management Authority would like to thank all first responders, especially the VIFEMS, and apologizes to the community for any inconvenience that may have been experienced.
