U.S. VIRGIN ISLANDS – Governor Albert Bryan Jr. has issued proclamations recognizing February as National Black History Month, Heart Health Month, Children’s Dental Health Month and Career and Technical Education Month.
Governor Bryan declared February National Black History Month in recognition of events over the last decade that he noted indicate “a deliberate attempt to rewrite, modify, and defile African American history, tradition, and culture.” The governor proclaimed February the month to honor the extraordinary contributions made by African Americans throughout the history of the nation and to “renew our commitment to liberty and justice for all.”
In keeping with the national trend, Governor Bryan declared February Heart Health Month in the U.S. Virgin Islands. On Friday, Feb. 2, Gov. Bryan encouraged VI citizens to join the fight against heart disease and raise awareness of the disease by celebrating Wear Red Day and taking steps to improve their heart health, and to encourage colleagues, friends, and family to live healthier lives.
Gov. Bryan has proclaimed February National Children’s Dental Health Month in the Virgin Islands recognizing that good dental habits are learned at a young age and are reinforced by parents and dental healthcare providers. The governor encourages public officials, educators, and all Virgin Islanders to be aware of children’s dental concerns and to schedule appointments for their children’s dental care.
By proclaiming the month of February as Career and Technical Education Month, Gov. Bryan is recognizing that VI Department of Education Career and Technical Education programming provides high school students with meaningful applications of real-world work experiences. Gov. Bryan wrote that as a Territory we are calling on our leaders to put a greater emphasis on the value of CTE and the lucrative careers it leads to and the services and benefits offered by the Career and Technical Education programs in this community.
In recognition of school counselors who are employed in public and private schools to help students reach their full potential, Governor Bryan has proclaimed the week of February 5 through February 9th National School Counseling Week in the Virgin Islands.
Citing engineering as an invisible or stealth profession because “everything around us and the things we use every day have been engineered in some way,” Governor Bryan has proclaimed February 18 through February 24th as National Engineering Week in the Virgin Islands.
Governor Bryan has declared Feb. 29 Digital Learning Day in the U.S. Virgin Islands in keeping with the annual national and international celebration of great teaching and learning in K-12 schools. Because today’s world demands the nation have a highly trained workforce skilled in the use of technology and digital content to compete in the global economy, Governor Bryan is calling upon public officials, educators and all Virgin Islanders to participate in Digital Learning Day activities and use it as a day to explore and learn about new types of classroom innovation in the Virgin Islands.
