Governor Albert Bryan Jr. Issues May Proclamations Honoring Service, Community and Heritage in the U.S. Virgin Islands

U.S. VIRGIN ISLANDS — Governor Albert Bryan Jr. has issued a wide-ranging series of proclamations for the month of May 2025, recognizing the contributions of individuals and groups across the U.S. Virgin Islands and highlighting the values of service, public safety, health, heritage, and community spirit.

The proclamations reflect Governor Bryan’s ongoing commitment to recognizing those who strengthen the social fabric of the Virgin Islands and raise awareness on issues that matter to the people of the territory.

Honoring Health and Community

Governor Bryan proclaimed May as Stroke Awareness Month, encouraging residents to educate themselves on the signs, prevention, and treatment of stroke, one of the leading causes of death and disability.

He also declared May as Older Americans Month, urging the people of the Virgin Islands to celebrate the profound contributions of the territory’s older adults and to foster intergenerational connections. The Governor extended special appreciation to social workers and all professionals who serve older Americans and senior citizens in the Virgin Islands.

Civic and Spiritual Engagement

On May 1, the Virgin Islands observed Law Day and the National Day of Prayer, underscoring the importance of the rule of law in democracy and the spiritual strength of the community. Governor Bryan called on residents to reflect on their shared values and to participate in prayer and public discourse.

Celebrating Service Professionals

Governor Bryan recognized the dedication of various public servants through several week-long observances:

  • National Teacher Appreciation Week (May 5–9): Honoring the educators who shape the minds and futures of Virgin Islands youth.
  • National Nurses Week (May 6–12): Acknowledging nurses for their compassion, professionalism, and role at the heart of healthcare delivery.
  • National Correctional Officers and Employees Week (May 4–10): Commending correctional staff for performing their duties with integrity under some of the most challenging circumstances.
  • Public Service Recognition Week (May 4–10): Recognizing the dedication of all public servants whose work often goes unseen but has a lasting impact on the community.

Commemorating Law Enforcement and Public Safety

  • Virgin Islands Police Week (May 11–17): A time to honor law enforcement officers past and present, and to remember fallen officers through ceremonies and community engagement.
  • Peace Officers Memorial Day (May 15): A solemn remembrance of those who gave their lives in the line of duty.
  • National EMS Week (May 18–24): Celebrating Emergency Medical Services providers for their life-saving work and dedication to public health and emergency response.

Cultural and Consumer Awareness

  • Virgin Islands African Heritage Week and African Liberation Day: Commemorating the 66th anniversary of global efforts to achieve African unification, liberation, and social development.
  • VI Flag Day (May 14): Honoring the pride and identity of the Virgin Islands through celebration of the territorial flag.
  • Contractor Fraud Awareness Week (May 19–23): Promoting consumer education and vigilance in response to contractor fraud. Governor Bryan encouraged residents to seek multiple estimates, verify contractor credentials, and work closely with insurers during rebuilding or renovation efforts. 

“These proclamations honor those who uplift and protect our community, preserve our heritage, and ensure the well-being of every Virgin Islander,” said Governor Bryan. “May is a time for reflection, gratitude, and action. I encourage everyone to take part in these observances and recognize the individuals who serve and strengthen our territory every day.”
